Elected to the U.S. Senate in1874, Blanche Bruce had been a slave for 23 years. By purchasing an 800-acre plantation and many rental properties, he became a very wealthy man. He later gained appointments under 4 U.S. Presidents, and was the first black man to have his name printed on U.S. currency.
